It's Wednesday. It's Thursday. It's 5:30 AM on the east side of Cleveland and Gary Nolan is opening the door to a local honky-tonk.
The tavern bears his name – Nolan's – and it's been in his
family since 1954 when his father built it. Some of his best
customers are already lining up at the door, their eyes weary,
red from the late shift at the nearby glass factory, ready for
their first shot of rye.
In the old days, when he wasn't on the road, he'd be opening
the door at the bar more often. These days, on Friday he may
be in Framingham. Saturday, he may be in Dubuque. On Sunday
or Monday, it might be Raleigh. Tuesday? It must be Brussels…
Vermont. Gary Nolan, tavern operator, recently retired radio
talk show host, is on the road nearly every day of the week
because he's running for office: the office of President of
the United States.
With the Nolan Campaign, there is no media circus. "Meet the Press" isn't calling him…yet,
though C-Span recently made him a guest on their morning show.
There is no scrum of TV microphone booms in his face. No swarm
of handlers dabbing at his makeup: he has no handlers. It's
the life of a Libertarian third-party candidate.
"Nolan's Run" is a documentary story of an Everyman
and idealist, a man of modest means who's fed up with the government
and decides to do something about it...>>
